Dogbreedinfo.com will be the best place for you to go. They ask what you are needing in a dog and give you a list of suitable ones to pick from. You can then do research about each breed and choose from there. Good luck:>)
Definitely get a golden retriever. They have extremely good temperments with childern and they are very smart, easy to train, and very loyal!!!
full blooded black lab is good with children and good watch dogs we have one
golden retriever they are very good with kids and they will help protect the home but they do need to be brushed alot.
Saint bernards. German Shephards, Pittbulls, Rottweilers, Labs, Greyhounds. etc. are all good dogs…
The best dog that comes to my mind is a lab. They are cuddly, friendly, and love kids. at the same time they r great watch dogs. My neigbors have one and they love her.
I’d go with a german shepherd. They are just all around good dogs.
golden retreivers are very kind loving dogs, they dont get too hyper and they are just great dogs, i have a small dog but i wish i had a golden retriever i ♥ them
Definately go for the german Shepherd
They are a big dog and they are also a family dog. they are a great watch dog and they don’t bark too much. They are very protective of the family that they live with. Great, Great, dog.
As far as the house training goes, get the dog as a pup and tie a cow bell or a bell that can be heard on to the door that you will let the dog out of. hang the bell low enough that the dog can ring it.
Every time you let it out ring the bell and to prevent her from going in the house, catch him in the act and take him out side. Don’t forget to ring the bell. If the pup rings the bell like they are playing with it, you still need to make him go out so that he will know that the bell is for asking to go out.
All of our dogs ring the bell to go out and all of the dogs that we rescue, big and small, learn how to do it too.
Good Luck!

As a trainer for 15 years I highly recommend a labrador retriever. Highly intelligent, loving, smart, great with children, hard working and affectionate. Most large breed dogs have to be watched for hip problems as they get older and the only reason I would choose a lab over lets say a Golden Ret. is the length of the coat. Nearly all dogs shed, if this is a consideration maybe try a Labradoodle, which is a cross between a Lab and a standard Poodle (larger than a Lab.) they don’t shed, have a unique look but all the good qualities of a Lab but with the added water dog aspect of the Poodle.
I would have to saw a golden retriver ot a lab.. they are fairly easy to potty train and usually have good temps… but if you want a dog that is going to stay indoors all the time including going to athroom inside then getting a smaller dog would be better… not all small dogs bark alot or have bad temp you just have to get them from a breeder and look around i have a yorkie he barly barks and is supper friendly.. Another way to get a good temp dog is when they are a puppy take them were ever you get the more people the meet the better they will be. GOOD LUCK
I have owned and fostered many breeds, but the only breed I fell in love with is the Labrador Retrievers. Thay are the sweetest dogs they are very loving and devoted to their families. They are hihgly intelligent so they are easy to train. Plus they are a versatile breed and also love kids and other dogs. My Labs going swimming, kayaking, hiking, camping, sledding and snowmobling with the kids and us. The kids have so much fun with and they love the attention. My Labs are very friendly and outgoing but are protective over the kids and us. They are a perfect all around family dog.
You are the only one that can answer this question. the thing you have to remember is that not everything you read is true about certain breeds. When we where looking at getting an Akita, we read that they did not like anyone other then their own family, they where dog aggressive and food aggressive. none of which is true with our guy!! He loves everybody, loves our cats, get along with all other dogs even unfixed males and the cat chance him out of his food bowl but yet he is a great watch dog and very easy to train!! He absolutly love my two neices age 1 1/2 and 5 years old!!! He follows them all over theplace and makes sure they stay out of trouble!!! He is the perfect dog!! Everyone is going to tell you to get their favorite breed of dog or the kind that they own, but it is you that has to decide for yourself what is right for you.
Research and talking to people that actually own the breeds is best!! Go Check out some breeds even a great mixed breed would be good!! Adoption is the best!!
CLARA D!!!! ha ha since when do Akitas not eat alot!!! ha ha Mine eats 20 pounds of food a week!!! ha ha And he eat expensive food to!!! You are right though they are great very easy to trian dogs!!!
get a australian sheperd they are really nice dogs !!!!my aunt has 3 of them they are so so nice and cute!!
I have a 3 year old chocolate lab, he is great with all ages of kids and is very protective of them also. He lets my 2 year old niece climb all over him, he never nips at any of them even when he is eating. He is so gentle… but…
He gets very protective of them when someone is trying to harm them. If my husband tries to wrestle with my son the dog will bark and growl and get in between them.
Definately get a lab, they are all around good family dogs. He is our 2nd and we won’t have any other breed till the kids are grown.
I think there are other considerations like grooming needs to take into consideration. How large is large?
Great Pyrenees are WONDERFUL family dogs. They are not called the “Gentle Giant” for nothing. They are also guardians and very loyal to their families and get along beautifully with other animals in the house whether its anothe dog, cat or gerbil. They also blow their coat twice a year, and can be the size of a small pony.
You can’t go wrong with a Golden Retriever. They are intelligent, friendly, easily trained, loyal, obedient, faithful, and beautiful dogs. They adore children, love to play and snuggle and don’t have a tinge of a mean streak.
Our children grew up with Golden’s, they were toddlers when we got our first one, Beau. They would pull on him, fall on him, lay on him, everything little ones do. He watched over them and just adored them. We lost him 16 years ago and got another one, Dillon, who is 14 now. The kids are grown and whenever they come to visit, I tell Dillon they’re coming and he starts looking for them (he knows their names, honestly).
Obviously, any large dog needs lots of exercise, so keep that in mind. Good luck, I hope you find a dog that you love.
I have a blue heeler and two nephews of ages 2 and 7. the 7 year old is a cancer survivor. my heeler is awesome with them. they can climb on him, he heards them around (gives the kids and dog exercise) plays ball like no tomorrow (soccer, heards the ball with his head)…. he is also a very good protector, if anyone is around that he doesn’t know, he lets us know… great breed, very loyal…. no one ever thinks about the heelers…….
Chesapeake Bay…very cool breed with all the good qualities of the Labs or Goldens
Labs are good with kids. My husband and I have 5 kids between us and 3 dogs. 2 are lab mixes and one is a full blooded lab. They are so good with kids and any other kids that come to the house. We take them camping with us every year and I never have to worry about anyone walking up to them.
There are many different kinds of dogs out there that’s right for you. Such as a Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers are a perfect family pet. It’s great with children and it house trains very well, learns quickly and is very clean. There is also the Borzoi dog, also called the Russian Wolfhound. This dog might not be as easy to train as the Golden Retriever but it’s a great family pet. It’s has a similar shape to the Greyhound. They are gentle, sensitive dogs with gracious house-manners and they have a great respect for humans. And they never really bark at all. They are fast learners who quickly become bored with repetitive, apparently pointless, activity, and they can be very stubborn when they are not properly motivated.
Siberian Huskies are easy to housebreak and they adore children! Make sure to get a good one from a rescue or rep. breeder.
I would agree with a lab, however, they do like to chew and can be quite the barkers! I would also like to suggest an Akita. Akita’s are extremely loyal and great with children. They are a protective breed. They are affectionate to their owners and are excellent watchdogs, although they do not bark unless something is amiss. Akita’s do not bark often, it is very characteristic of them to let out one deep bark to let you know someone it at the door or if they feel threatened. They require only moderate exercise, adjust well to apartment living as long as they receive daily walks, do not eat large quantities of food, and are long-lived. I hope this helps, good luck!!
You should get a great dane. They are very kind with children and are very great watch dogs. They are very big and may need a big yard. But are very easy to train.
My golden retreiver was easy to train, and great with children. Also, any kind of labrador is also great with kids, but they are not as bright.
Consider a Boxer. They don’t bark much unless they have a good reason to. They have excellent temperments. I personally would not recommend a lab, they are way to high strung., speaking from personal experience. Boxers are one of the best family dogs. They love children, are excellent watch dogs, and are very intelligent. We have one, and have two kids, 16 months and 3 and 1/2. Our dog loves them, has to be with them outside. Some people believe boxers are mean, but they are very opposite. They just look intimidating, and they are actually big babies. Do some research on them and you’ll find all good things about them and families.
A Black Lab or Lab mix would be perfect for what you want. They are generally great with kids, and intelligent and can be kept inside, though you need to set aside time to walk them outside, like any other dog. The pounds are full of them, and large dogs, especially large black dogs are the hardest to adopt out, so you will have your pick at the pound and you will be saving a life to.
