go to a shelter like an spca and rescue a dog from there. Then you will be able to choose a dog together and be able to see it’s temperament before you get it.

How about a Boston Terrier? They are considered medium size, and mine will bark like crazy if a stranger comes to the door. Plus they have great personalities

First check out the dog laws in the city where you’ll be living. There may be restrictions on size, muzzles, and other requirements. Best check those out before getting a dog.

The best option is to go to your local shelter and adopt a dog there. You’ll get a good idea of what his temperament is, how large he is, sheds, intelligence etc. etc.

The next thing is obedience training. I’m sure you’re capable but nothing beats the CLASS setting - where the dog will be with others and you’ll have the impulse to work with him regularly (homework).

Try getting into a foster group. Check out both of the kinds of dogs you want. See which one you like better and buy it. =)

Some people think Weimarainers are very hyper active, but I have had several and train them professionally. If given enough attention and reward, they can be some of the BEST behaved dogs available and mine is a WONDERFUL babysitter. She is very very gentle with kids and I have had 10 offers to buy her from me from various people already! She’s absolutely amazing, and I have had the same response from the owners of the other dogs I have trained. They listen with hardly any effort as well! Good luck!!

beagles are great family dogs. that or a british foxhound, which is like a taller beagle.

A golden-doodle. They are a great mix. A Poodle, and a Golden. They don’t shed, and they are extremely smart. I have one, and he is the cutest thing! They get to be 80+ lbs. though.

we got a dog before kids and boy was that a mistake. now we have kids and also have to take care of the dog. Take the leap and have kids now.

you should get a mixed dog like a half german shepeard and a half golden retriever. they’re very playful and have a lot of energy and their big when they get older, but small when they’re younger

I love the sheltie/collie breed. They are very very smart and very good with children. Our sheltie is about 32 lbs, she is a little bigger then most. The border collies are one of the smartest dogs that I know of. They do require lots of exercise though and love to play 24/7. Good luck with the move and the new pet.

I have two small dogs.

My female, half Jack Russell terrier and half chihuahua is smart, has energy (not too much though) and very well behaved. She is also one of the cutest dogs I’ve ever seen and she receives constant attention wherever we go. We have had strangers approach us and ask us if we would be willing to breed her. She was a little hard to potty train but when she eventually learned, she was 100% trained. Her breed mix name is “Jack Chi” and they are becoming more and more popular for their temperment. We just picked her from the shelter because she was so cute, not for popularity! All my dogs, and my cat, are rescues and the dogs have been the best dogs! I hope you will consider a dog from the shelter. And, my female only grew to be 9 pounds.

A mid sized dog with lots of energy, like an aussie shepherd, or a miniature aussie shepherd? Both very energetic, playful, bright, communicative, and lovable breeds. A large breed energetic dog, like a golden retriever? Rottwieler? High energy, needs walked daily, faithful, great with kids and other animals so long as properly socialized while young, etc. not to mention Protective of their pack. A fiercer defender you could not wish for, should, God forbid it, such need ever arise. And they’re smart enough to stay out of family arguments, at least my two are,, thankfully, ‘cuz I got hardheaded relations, let me tell ya! They are PROFESSIONAL arguers, oughtta become lawyers the lot of them, and I won’t listen to the BS in my house. Were my dogs mean, or stupid enough not to know I don’t want their help here, I’d have big trouble deciding whether to keep the dog or the relative in my life. But they seem to know more about when and where to be involved than most breeds I’ve owned. Maybe due to their confidence as a large dog?

There are so many. Some dogs are more stubborn than others, but all dogs are smart. Weimeneimers (sp?) they are bigger, full of energy and very smart. The ones that I have met are very loyal to their family though and not too excited to play with other humans. But that is from my personal experience only. Get a dog encyclopedia and go through each breed. Or go to a humane society and meet each dog and maybe you’ll find a nice dog that is perfect for you two. Congrats on your new family member!
