Love to travel 21 asked:

My family and I have a 10 month old female Aussie and would like to add another dog to our family. Ideally we would like a smaller dog that could keep up with our current dog without being run over! :)

Jack Russel or a small border collie would be able to keep up. Why not a smaller mutt from the SPCA??

Boarder terrier. Or any small dog at the animal shelter. Check out petfinder.com You will find so many cute little hyper mix breeds in need of a good home.

Another high energy dog…i think a Border Collie would do best. You want a dog that can keep up with a Aussie! Good Luck try
petfinder.com (i cant put the link for some reason if i try my computer wont let me post the answer)

Since Australian Shepherd’s are really HYPER dogs, you may want to consider one that has the same “I want to run around!” dog. Maybe a Jack Russell Terrier, since they are small? Or perhaps a pretty Border Collie, which are around the same size to your AS, so no need to get worried of her getting run over. xD

But I hope you wait a little longer before adding a new dog into your home; 10 months is still a pup, though hard to believe!

Bichon frise, or micro mini Multise

i think everyone in the world should get a chow chow.. doesnt have that much energy so maybe it could teach your aussie to relax lol

I have a kelpie and a Jack russell. They are brilliant together. A JRT would b good with your shepherd dog or a kelpie :)

Do some reasearch on a Shetland Sheepdog. They are smaller, but are pretty high energy, which would match an Aussie’s energy just fine.

We have the two, and they work fantastic together. Being from the same group (herding/working) they would have similar ‘wants’–basically, herding. This would make it easier to understand them together, I guess, rather than having a dog that wants to herd and one that wants to point out birds all day long, but that’s just my opinion.

They CAN be somewhat yappy, but this can be a training issue as well. Read up on the breed, and see if they interest you. They are beautiful, small, and might be a great energy match for an Aussie.

Active small breeds…. Boston Terrier comes to mind…. small, energetic, and very friendly.

Cavalier King Charles, Beagle…
Try searching Animal Planet’s breed directory, or take the breed selector quiz.
