Soothsayer asked:

When a stranger walks in front of our house or comes to our door, my dog always seems to know that someone is there, even if she is sleeping in the back of the house. If my wife walks up to our front door, she won’t bark. But, if my wife has a friend with her, our dogs starts barking. Does she detect the stranger by smell, sound, or some other secret dog sense?

All dogs do that, they know to smell your scent and know who they are by there scent and tone of voice, so if a stranger walkes into there teritory, they bark, to defend it, like in the wild.

it’s normal, your dog is just being protective over you and your house his/her teritory!! xx

dogs can hear a whole lot better than us. they hear if someone is there and they also smell if it’s a different person or if they’ve been to ur house before. they’re smart. and they do their job of protecting us!

Since dogs are basiclly half blind, there since of smell is extremely strong. Also, dogs are very protective over there owners so that could explain the barking.

Hearing. Dog’s ears work 20 times better than yours.

Everyone sounds differently, and she can tell who’s who.

My sisters beagle (and my dog is starting to learn) the sounds of different cars. He knows when someone he knows if comming way before I can hear a car.

My dog is starting to get it, he knows exactly when my girlfriend is comming in.

She can tell by smell. Just like if a strange car pulls on our road our dogs can hear it before w do and they will start barking and I am glad becaue we live on a private road out in the boonies and only have 4 houses on our road. If one of the neighbors pull on the road they dont bark because they know the sound of their cars but you let a stranger come down it I am up looking out the windows when my kids start barking and careing on. Be glad that your dogs let you know a stranger is close by especially now days the way things are.

your dog does this by smelling and hearing them. dogs have one million sent receptacles in each nostril. dogs can also hear 50 times better than humans.

Inside your four walls one sense predominates with your dog. Hearing. Your dog will identify friends, strangers, cars, trucks & etc. Whether he barks depends on how he has been trained. Instinctively he will tell you when someone is there.
