drsprite asked:

When we go to work we leave our 6 month old puppy out of her crate, but confined in the kitchen (where the crate is). The crate is open all day long, and she has plenty of chew bones and toys. We leave the crate open in case she wants to sleep there.

I’ve noticed that when we come home from work, my dog won’t calm down for about 6 hours (which can be rather annoying).

Is there something I can do for my dog during the day when I’m not home? Maybe some kind of automated dog toy or something?

If you have a thought other than hiring a dog sitter would be great.

Thanks for your help.

Try a doggie day care center. This is a great place to socailize your puppy and to run off some of that energy!

Good luck, just look in the phone book!

We left a TV or radio on for ours while at work. Nothing you do will stop the puppy from being excited when you come home, though. A companion may also be a good idea if you have the resources to care for another dog. Dogs are social and can get lonely sitting at home all day…even when they have lots of toys to play with.

Buy a couple of Kongs in an appropriate size for your dog. Put a few dog treats or kibble bits in them, seal the hole with either peanut butter or cream cheese and freeze them. Give the dog one on the way out the door. They use a lot of energy trying to get all the goodies out. They also make a talking treat thing that the dog has to roll around to get the treats out, but they are a bit pricey. You should definitely do something, because bored dogs can get destructive.

Your puppy is bored during the day and excited when you get home. Probably taking her out for a walk when you get home would wear her down more quickly than just having her hope around all over you when you get home. The ideal situation though would be if you had a fenced area or fenced locked dog run you could put her outside in with her toys while you are gone. She would get more exercise and would not be so wound up when you got home.
