John Williams Dog Training asked:

One of the most important commands for dogs in their early years or as an untrained dog for safety is the ‘come’ command. If your dog breaks the leash and runs free, this command could save your dog from running in front of a car or into any other of the many dangers untrained dogs face.

In this article I will guide you through the different steps needed to control your dog using the ‘come’ command and how to do it in the easiest and least confusing way for your dog and you. This command is best learnt when the dog is a puppy or very young and has not yet picked up too many bad habits or actions.

To start you should get someone else weather it is a friend or neighbour to lightly restrain your dog from being able to run after you as you show it one of their favourite treats and show them you have something of interest that they will want.

Start this exercise by keeping yourself not too far away from your dog or puppy to start with until they get the idea of the game. Once you are the correct distance get your friend or neighbour to let go of the dog so they come running at you, as they do this you should say the command ‘come’ and move back slightly so they have to travel slightly further.

When the dog gets to you, reward him with the treat or ‘good dog’ and a hug. After the first success it should get easier as you retry the game from further and further away. After a few times of playing this game your dog will get familiar with the way things are done.

When you feel comfortable with this training method, try playing hide and seek with your dog and let them find you when you shout ‘come’, rewarding still after every success. When your dog is comfortable with this method your training is complete and ready for the next time your dog darts for the road.

We have had my dog for almost 3 years now and we had the cat before we got the dog. My dog never leaves the cat alone. We have to keep the cat’s litter box behind a chair in the living room because he is too scared to leave the room and go to the bathroom because the dog pins him to the floor whenever he moves in the dog’s sight. Even when my cat is just sitting on a chair sleeping my dog will go over to it and bite it or hit it with it’s paw. How do I make my dog leave my cat alone? We have had this problem for almost 3 years now and nothing we do works. My cat should be able to roam the house freely just like everyone else but he cant. He has to wait until the dog is asleep just to walk around or go eat.
We do yell at her every time she does it. We do hit her whenever she bites the cat and we can’t seperate them.
My dog is not playing when he does this to my cat. He really bites and hits the cat. He also barks and growls at the cat. You can tell my dog is not happy and playful when she does this. She sometimes puts her whole body on top of the cat and pins the cat down to the floor and then puts the cats whole head inside her mouth.

Whenever I go for a walk with my dog, a Jack russell cross, he tries to attack other dogs. I got him from a cats and dogs home a couple of months ago. I like to let him off for a run around because he has a lot of energy. Most of the time there’s another dog in the field and he runs off to it. He won’t come if I call him if there’s another dog and he tries to attack it. A couple of dogs he seems fine with, he sniffs them, then he suddenly tries to attack him. I want to let him off for a run around but theres nowhere else I can do that apart from the field. I want to do something before he gets hurt.

I have a 2 year old miniature pinscher, and she is not nice around other dogs at all. When we first got her, she met another min pin the second day we had her, and that dog nipped at her. I think this is the source of her fear. We do not know anyone else with a dog, so it is very difficult to socialize her with other dogs. We would like to get another one, but are apprehensive becasue of how vicious she gets around dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have been in the same position?

Corey R asked:

I live in California and have two small children. The people behind us just moved in and build a dog run up against the bordering fence. They also placed the dog house against the fence and the dog is trying to get over to my yard.

These dogs bark & growl all day long. If they make it through the fence or over the fence. Do I have the right to shoot the dogs?

Sleek asked:

My baby LOVES dogs. She says “dog” at least 5 or 6 times a day and we don’t even have a dog. So, for her 1st birthday (in about 2 months) its gonna be a Dog Day ;-D. Please don’t say she won’t remember, because I’d have to beg to differ. I remember my 1st birthday and her Dad has early memories, too.

Besided Clifford the Big Red Dog and real dogs, the pet store, etc., what are some other dog themed things? Ideas?

I want to adopt a dog but I’m not sure which kind would be best to get…I live in an apartment so I would want a relatively small dog and I work full time so the dog/dogs would be left at home for eight hours at a time for possibly three times a week.

Paranormal Princess asked:

I live with my parents and my dad is talking about gettting a dog. We have 2 cats- one is almost 14 and the other one is 7 years old. Dad’s cat passed away in February of this year and he’s been talking about getting a dog ever since. Dad talks about getting a Lab or a border collie, but I don’t think either one of those dog breeds would be the most compatible with our 2 cats. Mom’s 7 year old cat is very territorial of the back porch and attacks any animal that comes on or near it and my 14 year old cat runs whenever an animal comes in the house. Mom’s alllergic to dog hair, so we can’t have a longhaired breed dog. What kind of dog gets along well with cats, because Dad’s starting to get serious about getting a dog?

Danzi asked:

I saw a pit-bull type dog at the shelter with ears that were docked very short to the head. Does this indicate that this dog was used or was intended to be used for dog fighting?

What do dog fighters do with the ears of the dogs anyway? In old days didn’t they used to dock them real close to the head?

Jackie S asked:

My dog was running around with another dog in my apartment building and they got in a little fight. He’s a boston terrier and the other was a golden retriever. The golden bit him a little, my dog didn’t bark or anything and it was over as soon as it started. He’s got a little bald mark on his head, and two marks on his back. Right after the fight my dog was still trying to play and jump around, so I’m pretty sure he’s fine and doesn’t seem hurt at all. He ate and drank water once we came in, and is still trying to play so I’m assuming he’s fine, but I’d like to know how to clean these marks so they hopefully won’t scar or get infected. Thanks for your help!
